Self Awareness and Recovery (SAR) programming aims to reduce recidivism rates and incarceration in the Sacramento region by creating space for at-risk youth and adults and people re-entering society from incarceration to begin to heal from trauma and find transformation in their lives. The SAR model of Transformation includes admission, awareness, transformation, and recovery. A number of workshops are taught at several middle and high schools, community centers, juvenile detention centers, and prison facilities, including: Facilitator training, 4 Working Agreements, Houses of Healing, Domestic Violence, and Creative Writing and Spoken Word. Through these different workshops held in small groups that meet regularly, youth and adults can begin to identify and connect with the core of their trauma, often stemming from childhood neglect, abuse, gang-related violence, isolation, and/or lack of positive adult role models. They can then learn how to heal from the trauma they experienced that is affecting their health and criminal behavior, and improve their lives and ultimately their health outcomes.
Workshop facilitators themselves have a history in trauma and violence, and through a “train the trainer” model, these workshops are led by people with shared experiences and proof of transformation themselves. |
In 2015, SAR celebrated their ten year anniversary at Chowchilla Valley State Prison. This short video shows the leadership, heart, and transformation that is achieved when people have the space and support to heal old wounds and learn tools that recover, transform and thrive.
